EMDR Intensives

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Led by Sarah Wills

EMDR is a type of guided psychotherapy that I use to help people heal from traumatic or really distressing experiences, like PTSD. In simple terms, it works by using something called bilateral stimulation — that could be eye movements, sounds, or gentle tapping — to help the brain reprocess memories.

It’s a bit like what happens naturally during REM sleep, when our brain is busy sorting through the day’s events. The aim with EMDR is to reduce the intensity of the emotions tied to painful memories, so they no longer feel as overwhelming. This helps your brain’s natural healing process get back on track, so you can move forward with more ease and peace.

Pause, Heal, and Transform with an EMDR Intensive

Life can get overwhelming, and finding time for deep healing isn’t always easy. That’s why psychologist Sarah Wills now offers EMDR Intensives in beautiful locations across Australia — giving you the space to step away from the everyday and truly focus on yourself.

Whether you choose a single, focused session or a longer multi-day intensive, each experience is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment to work through trauma, find clarity, and reconnect with your inner strength.

Why Choose an EMDR Intensive?

Sometimes, healing needs dedicated focus and time away from everyday distractions. An EMDR Intensive gives you a concentrated, one-on-one experience with Sarah, allowing for deeper, more impactful trauma processing in a shorter time. Here’s why an intensive approach can make a difference:

  • Move Through Trauma Faster: By focusing solely on your healing, you can make significant progress in a matter of days, not months.

  • Regain Emotional Balance: EMDR helps you process difficult memories, so you can experience more control and stability in daily life.

  • Build Self-Awareness and Resilience: Each session supports you in building insights, coping strategies, and inner strength that last.

  • Reconnect with Well-Being: Find clarity and peace, reconnecting with a sense of calm and resilience.

An EMDR Intensive is about dedicating time to yourself, giving you the freedom to work through what’s holding you back and move forward with renewed strength.

Is an EMDR right for you?

Use this checklist to determine if our intensive retreat is appropriate for your needs:

☐ Do you have a single trauma that is incident-specific issue you want to target?

☐ Do you want to focus on an ongoing or prolonged issue that happened in adulthood? (e.g., vicarious trauma from work as a first responder)

☐ Do you want to address ongoing medical trauma experiences?

☐ Are you seeking to target prolonged or complicated grief and a traumatic loss experience?

☐ Do you want to focus on attachment issues and childhood trauma?

☐ Do you have a significant trauma history and feel that you have limited coping resources?

If you find that several of these points resonate with your situation, our intensive retreat may be a good fit for you. We’re here to support you in making the best decision for your healing journey. Reach out to us at admin@inmymindpsychology.com if you have any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps people recover from trauma and distressing life experiences. It works by using bilateral stimulation, often through guided eye movements, to process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact.

  • An EMDR Intensive provides extended sessions over a short period, allowing for in-depth processing without the weekly gaps typical in traditional therapy. This can lead to faster breakthroughs and is ideal for individuals looking for focused, concentrated healing.

  • EMDR is commonly used to treat PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, and distressing memories from a range of situations, such as accidents, abuse, and grief. It is also effective for people who feel ‘stuck’ in their healing journey.

  • We offer different options, including 4-hour, 8-hour (over two days), and 16-hour (over three days) sessions. Each session type provides a focused amount of time tailored to the client’s needs and healing goals.

  • While the 4-hour option is for existing clients only, new clients can access the 8-hour and 16-hour intensives. Suitability will be discussed during an initial assessment to ensure EMDR is the best approach for each individual.

  • Our 4-hour session is available at Glen Eden, your home or online, the 8-hour and 16-hour intensives are available in Glen Eden, with optional accommodations for these sessions. For clients joining from a distance, accommodations provide a supportive, immersive environment during the healing process.

  • The sessions involve structured phases, including history-taking, preparation, and reprocessing of traumatic memories. This approach is designed to help individuals process difficult experiences and gain insight and relief quickly.

  • We recommend getting plenty of rest before the session and bringing comfortable clothing and any personal items that help you feel at ease. Your therapist will provide a full guide on what to expect and how to prepare in advance.

  • Many clients report feeling a significant reduction in distress after just one intensive. However, everyone’s healing journey is unique, and some may need additional sessions for deeper issues or complex trauma.

  • EMDR is generally safe but may not be suitable for everyone. Your therapist will conduct a thorough assessment to ensure that EMDR is appropriate, discussing any potential concerns or alternative approaches based on individual needs.
